Raft Building

Last Sunday (the 14th of September), the boarding children participated in a Raft building activity. They arrived in a field with some unfortunate wintry weather as a backdrop - however, it did little to dampen their spirits!

The boarders firstly had a little walk to get to a big tent which contained all the equipment that they needed to build their boats. Next, the organisers of the activity talked to them briefly about the types of things to wear - such as tracksuits and jumpers to keep them warm as the water was quite cold, and, so that they could take them off if they got wet.

Finally, it was time to begin constructing their rafts! Each group had a couple of big blue circular barrels that they had to use to make the boat float. They also had six poles which they laid over the barrels so that they could sit on them - they connected the barrels and poles with lots and lots of rope to make it extra sturdy.

Then, the excitement began as the kids were now ready to board their vessels! The instructors put the rafts up at the beginning of the river onto the top of two ramps so that the children could get on safely - they also explained to them the best ways to control their raft by paddling. It was then pushed down the ramps and travelled off along the river. Some trouble began as Tatiana (Year 4) accidentally fell off and couldn't get back on the boat! However, rescue came in the form of one of the Year 8 Spanish boys who dived in and helped her back onto the raft.

Everybody thoroughly seemed to enjoy it, as every single boarder jumped into the river at the end of their raft ride - even though the water was apparently very cold!

Will update again soon,

Miss Donato :)
